Token exchange is an authentication pattern where a system presents one credential and receives a different, typically short-lived and scoped, token in return.

In integration contexts it often means swapping a user-level or app credential for an API access token, or delegating identity between systems without sharing long-lived secrets.

It reduces exposure because the exchanged token expires and carries narrower permissions than the original credential.

A practical example

Example: your automation platform exchanges its client credential for a one-hour access token scoped to the CRM's contact API, so a leaked token stops working within the hour instead of persisting indefinitely.

What to evaluate before investing

Ask which exchange standards the vendor supports, such as OAuth 2.0 token exchange, and for which connectors.
Confirm whether exchanged tokens are automatically refreshed or require manual reconnection.
Check whether you can see token lifetime and scope values in an audit log.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Token exchange adds setup complexity and a dependency on the identity provider's availability; if the exchange endpoint fails, integrations stop until tokens can be reissued.
