Ad Exchange

An ad exchange is a digital marketplace where ad impressions are bought and sold through real-time auctions.

It sits between supply (publishers, often via SSPs) and demand (advertisers, via DSPs), clearing bids in milliseconds and handling the transaction, not the seller relationship.

A practical example

Example: when a user loads a webpage, the publisher's SSP sends the impression to an exchange; three advertisers bid 1.80, 2.10, and 2.35 USD, and the 2.35 bid wins and serves instantly.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which exchanges your DSP or SSP actually routes through, since many platforms now bundle exchange functions.
  • Check auction mechanics: first-price versus second-price rules change how you should bid.
  • Verify transparency on fees taken at the exchange layer and access to win/loss logs.

Limitations and tradeoffs

The SSP-versus-exchange distinction has blurred as platforms merged both functions. Treat 'exchange' as the auction layer, not a separate product you always buy standalone.
