Webhook Delivery Policy

A webhook delivery policy is the sender-side ruleset that governs when, how often and how reliably a vendor delivers webhook events.

It covers retry counts and intervals, what happens after retries are exhausted, ordering guarantees, and whether delivery is at-least-once, at-most-once or best-effort. These rules decide whether a missed event is recoverable or permanently lost.

A practical example

Example: a form tool fires a webhook when a lead submits a quiz.

If its policy allows only two retries over five minutes, an outage on your side during that window means the submission never reaches your CRM unless you also poll the source.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask for the exact retry schedule and total retry window before retries stop.
  • Check whether the vendor guarantees ordering of events or delivers them in arbitrary sequence.
  • Confirm whether undelivered events can be replayed or fetched later through an API.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A generous delivery policy still does not guarantee arrival, so workflows that cannot tolerate missed events need polling or reconciliation as a complement, not a replacement.
