Brand Lift

Brand lift is the measured change in consumer perceptions or behaviors attributable to a campaign, typically covering awareness, ad recall, message association, favorability, and purchase intent.

It is usually measured through controlled survey experiments: a randomized exposed group and a holdout control group answer the same questions, and the difference between them is the lift.

Some ad platforms offer built-in lift studies; others require third-party research partners.

A practical example

Example: a SaaS company runs a lift study on a video campaign, surveying users who saw the ad and a matched holdout group, then compares unprompted brand awareness between the two groups.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform runs lift studies natively, at what spend thresholds, and whether results include statistical significance.
  • Verify you can define custom survey questions rather than being limited to a fixed template.
  • Check minimum sample size requirements for your audience size, since small B2B segments often cannot support reliable lift measurement.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Lift studies take weeks and need large samples, so they are impractical for small audiences, and results reflect perception shifts rather than direct pipeline contribution.
