Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO)

Conversion Rate Optimization (CRO) is the structured practice of increasing the share of visitors or leads who take a desired action, using hypothesis-driven experiments such as A/B tests, multivariate tests and funnel analysis.

It is a discipline rather than a tool: it combines analytics, copy and design changes, and statistical validation to improve pages, forms and campaigns over time.

A practical example

Example: a team hypothesizes that a shorter demo form will lift submissions.

It runs an A/B test with the original three-field form against a five-field version, waits for sufficient sample, and adopts whichever variant wins on completed, qualified submissions.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the tool supports proper A/B and multivariate testing with sample-size and significance guidance, not just visual edits
  • Check whether experiments can measure downstream quality — qualified leads or pipeline — not only raw form submissions
  • Ask how the platform handles traffic allocation, flicker and cross-device identity so test results stay trustworthy

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tests need adequate traffic and time; on low-volume B2B sites, most experiments are underpowered and produce inconclusive results.
