Lead Conversion Rate

Lead conversion rate is the percentage of leads that advance to a defined next stage, most importantly from lead to customer.

Because 'lead' can mean a raw form fill, an MQL or an SQL, the number is only meaningful when the stage definitions are explicit.

Teams usually track it per stage and per source rather than as one blended figure.

A practical example

Example: a B2B services firm receives 500 leads in a quarter and closes 25 clients, a 5% lead-to-customer rate.

Splitting by source shows webinars convert at 9% while cold list imports convert at 1%, guiding where to invest.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Verify the tool lets you define each lead stage precisely and recalculates historical rates when definitions change
  • Check whether conversion is measured per source, campaign and segment, not only as a single aggregate
  • Ask how the platform handles leads with no disposition — stale or never-worked leads can distort the rate

Limitations and tradeoffs

The metric depends entirely on stage definitions; two teams quoting the same 'conversion rate' may be measuring different things.
