Website Conversion Rate

Website conversion rate is the percentage of site visitors who complete a defined goal action, such as submitting a demo request, starting a trial or downloading a resource.

It is calculated as conversions divided by sessions or visitors, and it differs from lead conversion rate because it happens before any lead exists — it is a property of the site experience, not of the sales process.

A practical example

Example: an analytics vendor's pricing page gets 8,000 sessions and 240 demo requests, a 3% page-level rate. Comparing against the homepage's 0.8% shows where intent is highest and where friction may exist.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform measures conversions per page, per goal and per traffic source, not just site-wide
  • Verify how sessions versus unique visitors are counted, since this changes the rate's meaning
  • Ask whether form abandonment and partial completions are visible, as these reveal friction the headline rate hides

Limitations and tradeoffs

Traffic mix drives the rate: a page can 'improve' simply because a campaign brought higher-intent visitors, not because the page got better.
