Conversion Attribution

Conversion attribution is the narrower practice of connecting a specific conversion event, such as a form submission, trial start, or purchase, to the marketing interactions that led to it.

It differs from campaign attribution, which distributes credit across campaigns: conversion attribution first requires agreeing on what counts as a conversion and which events are trackable, then applying a model to that event.

A practical example

Example: if "conversion" is defined as trial signup, a webinar might show strong attribution; if defined as closed revenue, the same webinar may look weak because trial-to-paid depends on sales and product experience.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Verify the platform supports multiple conversion definitions side by side, not one hard-coded event.
  • Ask how offline conversions, like closed deals in the CRM, are imported and matched to online touches.
  • Confirm conversion deduplication, so repeat form fills do not inflate counts.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Results are highly sensitive to the conversion definition and tracking coverage; changing what counts as a conversion can reorder your channel performance without any real change in customer behavior.
