Conversion Funnel

A conversion funnel is a model of the sequential steps a person takes toward a specific conversion, such as landing page, pricing view, form start and form submit.

Each step narrows the audience, so the shape reveals where people exit.

It is usually a web analytics construct focused on a single goal, narrower than a marketing or sales funnel that spans the whole customer journey.

A practical example

Example: an e-commerce-style trial flow defines four steps — ad click, signup page, profile setup, first action.

Analytics shows the biggest drop between profile setup and first action, pointing the team to onboarding rather than ads.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the tool lets you build multi-step funnels with custom events, not only fixed page-view sequences
  • Check whether drop-off can be broken down by device, source and segment to locate where exits concentrate
  • Ask how the platform handles out-of-order or multi-session journeys so steps are attributed correctly

Limitations and tradeoffs

Funnels assume a linear path; real buyers loop back, skip steps or return days later, so a strict funnel can undercount eventual conversions.
