Campaign Attribution

Campaign attribution is the practice of assigning credit for conversions or revenue to the marketing campaigns and touchpoints that preceded them.

It encompasses the choice of model (first-touch, last-touch, multi-touch, position-based), the data pipeline that feeds it, and the reporting that turns credit into budget decisions.

The model choice is a business judgment, not a technical default.

A practical example

Example: a deal influenced by a webinar, three emails, and a paid search click would receive different credit distributions under first-touch versus position-based models, changing which campaigns look worth scaling.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which models the platform supports natively and whether custom weighting is possible without engineering work.
  • Verify the tool handles multi-contact deals in B2B, where several people touch one opportunity.
  • Confirm you can export raw touchpoint data to audit any credit calculation yourself.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Attribution describes correlation between touchpoints and outcomes, not proven causation; a campaign that appears to drive revenue may simply correlate with deals that were going to close anyway.
