Content Gap Analysis

Content gap analysis is the process of identifying topics, keywords, or questions that your target audience searches for and that competitors address but your content does not.

It typically compares keyword coverage, ranking positions, and content depth across domains. The output is a prioritized list of content to create or improve.

A practical example

Example: a payroll software team compares its domain against two competitors and finds the rivals rank for 'contractor vs employee classification' guides that the team has never covered, adding that topic to the next quarter's plan.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the tool compares keyword coverage against specific competitor domains you choose, not just generic suggestions.
  • Check if results distinguish keywords where you rank weakly (improve) from those where you have no presence (create).
  • Confirm exports integrate with your editorial planning so gaps become briefs rather than static reports.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A gap is only worth closing if it matches audience intent and business value; copying every competitor topic can dilute focus and produce content outside your authority.
