CTA Visitor Handoff

A CTA Visitor Handoff is the defined pattern for carrying visitor context and identity when a CTA leaves your own domain—calendar booking pages, chat widgets, partner sites.

It specifies what travels across the boundary: URL parameters, hidden form fields, or API-passed context such as a lead ID and campaign source.

A practical example

Example: the 'book a demo' button appends the visitor's known email hash and campaign ID to the scheduling URL, and the booking tool writes both into hidden fields so the meeting record links back to the original touchpoint.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the scheduling or chat tool accept and store inbound identity parameters in fields your CRM can read?
  • Does the handoff preserve first-touch and campaign attribution, or does the external tool reset the session?
  • Is there a documented fallback when the visitor blocks parameters or arrives on the off-site page directly?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Third-party platforms limit how much context they accept and expose; some booking tools strip URL parameters or mask the lead identity, so the handoff pattern must be validated against each vendor's actual field support.
