Landing Page Visitor Handoff

A landing page visitor handoff is the practice of passing visitor identity and context from a landing page into embedded tools or off-platform destinations without losing it.

Common mechanisms include hidden form fields, URL parameters, and postMessage, a browser API that lets an embedded iframe exchange data with its parent page.

The pattern matters because embedded widgets often run in isolated frames or separate domains where cookies and page context do not carry over automatically.

A practical example

A visitor arrives from a paid search ad to a pricing page with an embedded ROI calculator.

The page appends the UTM parameters and a session identifier to the calculator's iframe URL, and the calculator posts conversion data back to the parent page via postMessage so the CRM record keeps the original source.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors whether embedded tools accept source parameters on load and return them with conversion events.
  • Test whether an iframe-based tool can read and write data through postMessage on your domain.
  • Verify that hidden fields survive multi-step forms and third-party form embeds.

Limitations and tradeoffs

postMessage requires explicit validation of message origins; accepting data from any embedded frame can let third-party scripts inject false conversion data.
