Domain Warm-Up

Domain warm-up is the gradual process of increasing email volume from a new sending domain or IP so mailbox providers learn to trust it.

Providers treat unknown senders with suspicion, so blasting thousands of messages on day one typically triggers spam placement or blocks. Warm-up schedules start with small volumes to engaged recipients and scale over weeks.

A practical example

Example: a company registers a subdomain for outbound sales email.

For the first three weeks it sends 20, then 50, then 150 messages per day to its most engaged contacts, before ramping toward full campaign volume.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform automates warm-up schedules or whether your team must manage volume manually
  • Confirm you can use a separate subdomain for cold or outbound sending so your main domain's reputation stays protected
  • Check whether warm-up progress and reputation metrics are visible in dashboards you can act on

Limitations and tradeoffs

Warm-up takes weeks, not days, and a damaged domain can require months of recovery; plan launch timelines around this constraint.
