Event-Based Marketing

Event-based marketing sends messages or updates records in response to specific actions a contact takes: visiting a pricing page, abandoning a cart, hitting a usage limit, or registering for a webinar.

The defining trait is the trigger: instead of a calendar date, a behavioral event starts the flow. Latency matters, because relevance decays quickly after the action.

A practical example

Example: an e-learning platform triggers a nudge email one hour after a learner abandons a course checkout, and a different sequence if the same learner later completes a free lesson.

What to evaluate before investing

  • List which event sources the platform can consume natively: web activity, product events, form submissions, or webhook inputs.
  • Ask how quickly a triggered message sends after the event, and whether delays are configurable.
  • Test whether you can preview and test event-triggered flows with sample data before going live.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Event-based marketing multiplies the number of live flows and edge cases; without deduplication rules and frequency caps, one busy contact can receive several triggered messages in the same hour.
