Account-Based Marketing (ABM)

Account-Based Marketing (ABM) is a strategy that treats individual target accounts — companies, not individual leads — as markets of one.

Marketing and sales jointly select a list of high-value accounts, map the buying committee inside each, and run coordinated plays such as targeted ads, personalized content, and executive outreach.

Success is measured by account penetration and pipeline created, rather than lead volume.

A practical example

Example: a team selects 40 target accounts, runs account-specific ad creative to anyone from those companies visiting the site, and alerts the account executive when three or more contacts engage in a month.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Verify the platform can match anonymous website and ad traffic back to target account companies, and ask how accurate that matching is.
  • Check whether sales and marketing share one account view — contacts, engagement, open opportunities — rather than separate dashboards.
  • Confirm you can define and measure account-level stages (e.g., one-to-many vs one-to-one plays) instead of forcing lead-based funnels.

Limitations and tradeoffs

ABM demands tight sales-marketing coordination and meaningful per-account investment; applied to too many accounts or without sales follow-through, it becomes expensive advertising with little pipeline impact.
