Account Planning

Account planning is the strategic practice of building a written plan for each key account: objectives, white space, relationship map, competitive position, and a sequenced set of plays for the next two to four quarters.

Unlike opportunity management, which tracks individual deals, account planning looks across the whole relationship, including customers with no open opportunity today. It is central to key-account and account-based motions.

A practical example

Example: for a logistics client contributing 18 percent of revenue, an account team drafts a plan with three objectives: expand into the client's freight division, secure an executive sponsor relationship, and defend against an incumbent competitor's bundle.

Each objective carries named owners, target stakeholders, and quarterly milestones reviewed in a shared workspace linked to the CRM account.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can account plans live inside the CRM, linked to the account record, or do they require a separate document that drifts out of sync?
  • Can multiple reps and roles co-edit a plan with visibility controls, since key accounts are team pursuits?
  • Does the tool connect plan objectives to actual opportunities and activity data so progress is measurable, not just narrative?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Account plans decay quickly when treated as annual documents; stakeholder changes and reorganizations make them stale within a quarter.

The tradeoff is effort: rigorous planning consumes selling time, so most teams reserve full plans for a defined tier of strategic accounts rather than the whole book.
