Heatmaps

Heatmaps visualize aggregated click, cursor-movement or scroll patterns on a page. They help teams identify frequently used or overlooked elements, but movement and scrolling do not prove attention or comprehension.

When comparing tools, check sampling, privacy controls and support for dynamic content and mobile layouts. Use the patterns to investigate a specific usability question rather than assuming the colors explain why people leave.

A practical example

Example: a click heatmap shows heavy clicking on a non-clickable pricing graphic; the team makes the graphic a link and watches whether clicks shift to the intended button in the following period.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether data is collected from all sessions or a sample, and how that affects statistical confidence.
  • Check how the tool renders overlays on responsive layouts and dynamic elements like modals.
  • Verify you can filter heatmaps by traffic source, device, and campaign.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Heatmaps are descriptive, not diagnostic; a hot area does not prove a design works and a cold area does not prove it fails, so pair them with session recordings and A/B tests.
