Lead Stage Governance

Lead Stage Governance is the control system around lifecycle stages: who may define them, who may move or revert a lead between them, and what evidence a change requires.

Lead Qualification defines the criteria for each stage; governance protects those definitions in operation.

It treats stage definitions as owned artifacts with version history, requires audit trails on every stage change, and sets rules against manual stage gaming—such as moving a lead to SQL to dodge a slow follow-up SLA.

A practical example

Example: a rule requires that only the marketing ops lead can edit stage definitions, that any manual move from MQL to SQL carries a linked meeting record, and that reverts trigger a notification to both teams.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does your CRM log who changed a stage, when, and from which value to which?
  • Can stage definitions be version-controlled with an approval step, or do edits happen silently?
  • Are there validation rules that block stage moves lacking required evidence, such as a logged activity?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Governance adds friction to everyday stage changes; keep evidence requirements proportionate to the stages where reporting and SLAs actually depend on accuracy.
