Lookalike Audiences

Lookalike audiences are prospecting segments an ad platform builds by matching the traits of a source audience, such as your purchasers, against its broader user base.

The platform scores similarity and delivers ads to new people who statistically resemble the seed list.

A practical example

Example: you upload 5,000 past buyers as a seed. The platform models shared attributes and targets a 1 percent lookalike, roughly the closest-matching few hundred thousand users in its base.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask what minimum seed size the platform requires and whether small lists degrade match quality.
  • Check whether you can adjust similarity breadth (1 percent versus broader tiers) and exclude existing customers.
  • Verify how the seed data is processed, retained, and shared under privacy policies in your markets.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Lookalike quality depends entirely on seed quality and platform data access; a noisy or biased seed produces misleading reach. Results vary by platform and are not comparable across walled gardens.
