Marketing Funnel Stages

Marketing funnel stages divide the buyer journey into phases that guide content and campaign choices. The common shorthand is TOFU (top of funnel, awareness), MOFU (middle, consideration) and BOFU (bottom, decision).

These are practical labels rather than a universal standard: each team defines its own stages, and the same content can serve different stages depending on the audience.

A practical example

Example: a team maps blog guides to TOFU, comparison webinars to MOFU and pricing-page case studies to BOFU. Tagging assets by stage lets them see that BOFU content is thin and prioritize its creation.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the platform lets you tag content and campaigns by stage and report engagement per stage
  • Verify stage definitions can be customized to your own terminology instead of forcing a fixed three-part model
  • Ask whether stage-level data connects to pipeline outcomes, so content investment can be tied to revenue movement

Limitations and tradeoffs

Stage labels describe intent, not buyer behavior; buyers skip stages or revisit them, so rigid stage-based sequencing can mismatch real journeys.
