Offer UTM Contract

An Offer UTM Contract is the parameter standard every link that delivers or promotes a specific offer must follow, from promo click through gated-host redirect to delivery email.

Offer fulfillment is where attribution most often breaks: download links get regenerated without parameters, gated-host redirects strip query strings, and delivery emails send plain URLs.

The contract names required parameters, allowed values, and which link types are exempt.

A practical example

Example: a gated whitepaper is promoted with utm_campaign=cloud-guide, but the fulfillment email links to a bare PDF URL.

Under the contract, that email must carry the same campaign value so the download session still attributes to the original offer push.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Download a test asset and confirm the final file URL or delivery email preserves the required UTM parameters end to end.
  • Check whether your gated-host or file server strips query strings on redirect, and whether the vendor supports parameter passthrough.
  • Verify the contract document lists every offer link type—promo, redirect, delivery—with required values and an owner for updates.

Limitations and tradeoffs

The contract only governs links you control; third-party marketplaces or partner syndication may rewrite or drop parameters, so treat those channels as separately tracked.
