Programmatic Advertising

Programmatic advertising is the automated buying of ad placements through software, where inventory across many websites and apps is purchased via real-time auctions or automated deals instead of manual negotiations with individual publishers.

Targeting, bidding, and optimization are handled by algorithms within configured rules.

A practical example

Example: a B2B firm uses an account-based advertising approach: it uploads a target account list, and the system bids for display impressions served to people at those companies as they browse news and industry sites, capping frequency per person per week.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which inventory sources and exchanges the platform accesses, and whether brand-safety and fraud filtering are included.
  • Check how account or company-level targeting is achieved, since it usually relies on third-party data matching rather than direct identification.
  • Evaluate transparency: can you see where impressions served, and what fees sit between your budget and actual media cost?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Programmatic reach is broad but imprecise at the individual level, and the supply chain includes multiple intermediaries taking fees; without frequency caps and quality filters, budgets can be consumed by low-value impressions.
