Real-Time Bidding (RTB)

Real-Time Bidding (RTB) is the auction mechanism behind much programmatic advertising: when a person loads a page, an impression is offered to multiple buyers, each bidding within milliseconds, and the highest bid wins the placement.

It prices each impression individually rather than in bulk packages.

A practical example

Example: a visitor opens an industry article; in the instant the page loads, three advertisers bid for the banner slot based on their own valuation of that visitor profile, and the winning ad appears before the page finishes rendering.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform lets you set bid strategies and ceilings, or whether bidding is a black box.
  • Check what data is available at auction time for targeting decisions, and how it complies with privacy regulations in your markets.
  • Evaluate whether you can exclude specific publishers or app categories from RTB inventory.

Limitations and tradeoffs

RTB offers efficiency and scale but limited control over exactly where ads appear, and open auctions carry higher fraud and brand-safety risk than private deals; many buyers blend RTB with direct or programmatic guaranteed deals.
