Remarketing

Remarketing is the practice of showing ads or messages to people who already interacted with your brand, such as site visitors, cart abandoners, or past customers.

It relies on cookies, pixels, or first-party identifiers to match audiences and typically runs on lower-funnel objectives.

A practical example

Example: a shopper adds a jacket to the cart but leaves. Three days later she sees an ad for that jacket with free shipping, served from a remarketing audience synced to an ad platform.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm which identifiers the tool uses (cookies, hashed emails, mobile IDs) and how it handles consent and signal loss.
  • Check frequency capping and exclusion logic so existing buyers are not targeted repeatedly.
  • Verify how audiences sync or refresh, and whether stale segments are automatically removed.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Remarketing audiences shrink as third-party cookies decline and privacy rules tighten. Budget for smaller match rates and lean more on first-party data capture.
