Search Impression Share

Search impression share is the percentage of eligible impressions a property actually received for a query set or campaign, expressed as your impressions divided by total available impressions.

In paid search, platforms report it directly; in organic contexts, tools estimate it from ranking data and modeled click behavior.

It answers a different question than ranking: not where you appear, but how often you appear at all relative to the total opportunity.

A practical example

Example: a B2B brand appears for 40 percent of eligible impressions across its target query set; the remaining 60 percent represents queries where competitors ranked or the brand had no relevant page.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Clarify whether the metric comes from a platform's own reporting or from third-party estimation, and how the estimate is built
  • Confirm the denominator: which queries and geographies count as 'eligible' impressions in the calculation
  • Check whether the tool can break impression share down by query theme, page, or campaign

Limitations and tradeoffs

Impression share counts appearances, not outcomes; a high share on queries that rarely convert can look healthy while masking a demand-quality problem.
