Search Opportunity

Search opportunity is a prioritization judgment: which queries or topics are worth pursuing given demand, competitive difficulty, and your ability to serve the intent.

It is not a single metric; vendors often package it as an 'opportunity score', but the inputs and weights are proprietary.

A sound opportunity assessment pairs external signals, such as volume and ranking difficulty, with internal ones, such as existing content assets and business relevance.

A practical example

Example: a team shortlists three topics with similar volume, then deprioritizes the largest because the current first page is dominated by marketplaces it cannot realistically outrank within the planning horizon.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask the vendor to explain exactly which variables feed its opportunity score and their weights
  • Confirm you can adjust or override the scoring with your own business-relevance criteria
  • Check whether difficulty estimates are explained, including what counts as a competing domain

Limitations and tradeoffs

Opportunity scores are directional heuristics, not predictions; treating a high score as a guaranteed outcome invites misallocated budget, especially in competitive categories.
