Sender Reputation

Sender reputation is the trust score mailbox providers assign to your sending domain and IP based on historical behavior: complaint rates, spam traps hit, bounce patterns, volume consistency and recipient engagement.

It functions like a credit score for email. A poor reputation causes even well-crafted messages to be filtered, and it follows you when you switch platforms.

A practical example

Example: after a team imports an old, unverified list and sends a blast, complaint rates spike. For the following months, even their clean newsletters to engaged subscribers land in spam until reputation recovers.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the vendor surfaces reputation signals such as complaint rates, unknown-user bounces and blocklist status
  • Verify whether sending from shared infrastructure exposes you to other tenants' behavior and what safeguards exist
  • Confirm the platform can enforce throttling or pause sends automatically when negative signals spike

Limitations and tradeoffs

Reputation is earned slowly and lost quickly; no platform feature can compensate for sending to unengaged or purchased lists.
