Session Duration

Session Duration is the total time a visitor spends on the site within one session, from the first interaction to the last recorded event.

It is used as a rough proxy for interest and content depth.

Its main weakness is methodological: traditional analytics cannot see when a user closes a tab or leaves, so the final page of a session often contributes little or no time, which systematically undercounts duration.

Event-based tools reduce this gap by tracking scroll, clicks, and custom interactions.

When comparing analytics or automation platforms, ask how the last interaction is measured and whether duration can be tied to specific content or campaigns rather than reported only as a site-wide average.

A practical example

Example: a knowledge base shows an average session duration of 45 seconds, but after adding scroll and video-play events to tracking, the same behavior reports as 2 minutes, revealing the earlier figure was a measurement artifact.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the vendor handles the last page of a session and whether custom events extend measured duration.
  • Check whether duration can be segmented by page type, campaign, and audience.
  • Verify you can compare duration against conversion outcomes in the same report.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Longer sessions are not automatically better; a long duration can reflect friction or difficulty finding information, so it should be read alongside navigation paths and conversion data.
