Session Replay

Session Replay records individual visitor sessions as playable recreations of mouse movements, clicks, scrolls, and page transitions.

Unlike heatmaps, which aggregate behavior, replays show single journeys, which makes them useful for diagnosing specific friction: a form field that confuses people, a button that fails on mobile, or a checkout step where users hesitate.

Modern tools mask sensitive inputs such as passwords and payment fields, but the recordings still capture personal browsing behavior, which brings legal obligations under privacy regimes like GDPR.

When evaluating vendors, the critical questions are data masking, storage location and retention, and whether replays can be linked to identified contacts in your CRM or automation platform.

A practical example

Example: replays of a signup page show many users typing an address into the ZIP code field and deleting it; the team relabels the field and watches whether abandonment changes in the next period.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm automatic masking of passwords, payment fields, and personal data, and test it yourself.
  • Ask where recordings are stored, for how long, and how they comply with GDPR or CCPA.
  • Check whether replays can be filtered by funnel step, device, or identified user.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Replays are a sample of behavior that can consume significant storage and raise privacy exposure; watching a handful of sessions can mislead if not paired with aggregate metrics.
