Share of Voice

Share of Voice (SOV) is the proportion of total category exposure a brand captures, expressed against named competitors.

It has several variants: paid SOV based on impression share or estimated media weight, organic SOV based on search visibility for a tracked keyword set, and social SOV based on mention volume.

Because each variant uses different data sources, SOV figures are only meaningful within a consistent methodology and a defined competitor set.

A practical example

Example: a martech vendor tracks organic SOV for twenty category keywords across five competitors and reviews monthly whether its share of first-page rankings is growing or shrinking.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which data source each tool uses for SOV and whether competitors are selected manually or inferred automatically.
  • Verify whether the metric is impression-based, mention-based, or ranking-based, and that the tool states its methodology openly.
  • Check whether you can weight keywords by commercial importance instead of treating all tracked terms equally.

Limitations and tradeoffs

SOV is a relative benchmark, not a demand measure: a growing share of a shrinking category can still mean fewer absolute opportunities.
