Topic Cluster

A topic cluster is a content architecture in which a comprehensive pillar page covers a broad subject and multiple related cluster pages address specific subtopics, all interlinked.

The model signals topical depth to search engines and helps visitors navigate from narrow questions to complete coverage. It is a planning structure, not a technical feature.

A practical example

Example: a CRM vendor publishes a pillar page on 'sales pipeline management' and links it to cluster articles on forecasting methods, stage definitions, and pipeline review cadence, with every cluster page linking back to the pillar.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether the tool supports mapping clusters visually, assigning pages to pillars, and flagging missing internal links.
  • Ask how it tracks cluster-level performance (aggregate rankings and traffic per topic) rather than only per-page metrics.
  • Confirm it can audit existing content to identify pages that compete with each other or belong in a different cluster.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Clusters demand sustained production and disciplined internal linking; a pillar page with thin or orphaned cluster pages can look less authoritative than a smaller, well-connected set.
