UTM Parameters

UTM parameters (Urchin Tracking Module, a convention inherited from Urchin, Google Analytics' predecessor) are tags appended to a URL: utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content.

Analytics and marketing automation platforms read them to attribute sessions and conversions to specific campaigns. They are a de facto convention, not a formal standard, so their usefulness depends entirely on naming discipline.

A practical example

Example: a newsletter link tagged utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2025-q2-webinar lets your automation platform route that lead into the webinar nurture track automatically.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether the platform offers a link builder with validation against your naming convention, not free-text fields alone.
  • Verify case sensitivity handling and whether values are normalized, since "Email" and "email" can split reports.
  • Confirm UTMs persist through redirects and are captured into lead records, not just web analytics.

Limitations and tradeoffs

UTMs break easily: links shared in messaging apps lose tags, redirects can strip parameters, and inconsistent naming fragments reporting, so a written convention and periodic audits matter more than the tags themselves.
