Account Audit Trail

An Account Audit Trail is the retained, queryable history of changes to the account object itself: owner changes, hierarchy edits, tier changes, and field updates made by integrations.

It differs from contact-level trails and system event logs; it exists to answer disputes — who moved this account, and did a sync overwrite a human decision?

A practical example

Example: two reps claim ownership of the same account after a territory change. The audit trail shows the routing rule reassignment at a specific timestamp, plus the manual override that followed, ending the dispute.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does the CRM retain field-level change history on accounts for as long as your dispute window requires?
  • Do integration tools log their own writes to accounts, including the rule or mapping that triggered them?
  • Can non-admin RevOps users query the trail without a support ticket?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Deep audit history often sits in higher-tier CRM editions or requires the data warehouse as the archive; verify retention limits before assuming a dispute from last year can be reconstructed.
