Opportunity Audit Trail

An Opportunity Audit Trail is the field-level history of changes on a deal record: who edited the stage, amount, close date, or products, when, and from what value to what value.

It exists because close-date pushes and amount edits are the most contested changes in revenue teams.

A useful trail captures the old and new value, the actor (user, integration, or automation), and a timestamp, and lets managers query history rather than scroll it.

A practical example

A rep claims a forecast was inflated by a manager who pushed a deal's close date from March 31 to June 30.

The audit trail shows the edit, the actor, and the exact timestamp, so the forecast review can reconstruct what happened instead of arguing from memory.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Does the trail record old value, new value, actor type (user vs. integration), and timestamp for every deal field change?
  • Can managers filter and export history by deal, field, or actor without admin help?
  • Are edits made by sync tools and automations labeled distinctly from human edits?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Retention windows vary widely; some platforms purge field history after months, which limits how far back a dispute can be reconstructed.
