Champion Identification

Champion identification means finding someone inside a prospect’s organization who understands the problem, has influence and is willing to advocate for a solution.

This person may overlap with other buying roles, but enthusiasm alone does not prove they can move a decision forward.

Look for concrete actions, such as explaining the approval process or introducing other stakeholders, before relying on their support.

A practical example

Example: in a deal with a mid-size logistics firm, the operations manager who initiated the search, shares internal pain points, and arranges meetings with the CFO is behaving as a champion, while the IT director running security review is an evaluator.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask vendors how their CRM or sales tooling flags champion behavior, such as meeting frequency, content engagement, or multi-threading signals, and whether the logic is configurable.
  • Verify whether champion data syncs to your CRM as a structured field or score, so reps can filter and report on it, rather than living in call notes.
  • Test how the system distinguishes a champion from a merely engaged contact, and whether it surfaces when champion activity drops mid-deal.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Champion signals are proxies, not proof; a supportive contact can stall a deal for reasons no scoring model captures, so treat identification as a prompt for rep judgment, not a verdict.
