Contact Lifecycle Rule

A Contact Lifecycle Rule is the automated logic that moves an individual contact between stages: subscriber to lead, lead to qualified contact, active to recycled, or any stage to suppressed.

Where lifecycle governance defines the stage model and who owns each stage, and a status map lists allowed values, lifecycle rules are the executable transitions — what event causes a move, what happens to active campaigns on conversion, and when a contact may re-enter nurture after going cold.

Suppression logic is the highest-stakes piece: customers and unsubscribes must exit marketing flows reliably.

A practical example

Example: when a contact converts to an opportunity contact role, a rule removes them from all nurture streams, tags the opportunity, and blocks re-enrollment unless the deal closes lost after 90 days.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether conversion events automatically exit contacts from active campaigns and sequences.
  • Verify suppression rules can be triggered by CRM status changes, not only unsubscribe links.
  • Check whether recycled contacts have a defined re-entry condition rather than looping indefinitely.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Automated transitions are only as reliable as the events feeding them; a missed job-change or status update can leave a customer in a prospect nurture stream despite correct rules.
