Contact Sync Rule

A Contact Sync Rule is the contact-specific configuration of a MAP-CRM integration: the exact field list, the direction of each field (one-way or two-way), the sync trigger (real-time, scheduled, or on-change), and the conflict behavior when both systems hold different values.

Contact sync is typically the highest-volume integration in the stack, so small misconfigurations compound: a wrongly mapped field can silently overwrite engagement history or consent flags across thousands of records.

The rule set is a template you should draft before vendor selection, not discover after go-live.

A practical example

Example: a team syncs email, name, and lifecycle stage two-way in real time, but consent one-way from MAP to CRM, so no CRM import can erase an unsubscribe.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether field mapping supports one-way and two-way direction per field, not just per object.
  • Verify sync triggers are configurable — real-time versus batch — and what latency each mode carries.
  • Test conflict behavior in a sandbox: what happens when both systems change the same field?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Two-way sync maximizes consistency but multiplies conflict risk; most teams run critical fields one-way and accept some staleness rather than expose consent data to overwrites.
