Customer Ownership

Customer Ownership is the steady-state model that defines who is accountable for an account after the deal closes: sales, customer success, or a shared arrangement with explicit boundaries.

The model must answer practical questions — who runs renewal conversations, who may send commercial outreach, who answers expansion signals, and what happens when both teams act on the same account.

A practical example

Example: a shared model assigns CS ownership of onboarding and adoption, while sales retains expansion outreach above a defined ARR threshold; anything below routes to CS-led upsell.

Without written boundaries, both teams email the same champion in the same week.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the CRM hold two owner fields (CS and sales) or only one account owner?
  • Does the CS platform support ownership assignment rules by segment or ARR band?
  • Can activity timelines merge so both teams see each other's outreach?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Shared ownership only works with written boundary rules; a tool that supports dual owners will not prevent duplicate outreach if the operating model is undefined.
