Customer Visibility

Customer Visibility is the data-access design for the customer record: what shared view of the installed base sales and customer success both operate from.

The core fields are usage or product adoption data, health indicators, key contacts and their roles, contract terms, and renewal dates.

The design question is bidirectional: sales needs usage context to spot expansion moments, and CS needs pipeline context to avoid surprise renewal conversations.

A practical example

Example: an AE preparing a renewal sees in the shared record that usage of one module dropped over two quarters, and opens the conversation with an adoption plan instead of a price sheet.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check whether product usage data can be joined to the CRM account record without manual exports.
  • Verify renewal dates and contract terms are visible to both teams from one source of truth.
  • Confirm contact roles (economic buyer, champion, user) are maintained in a shared structure, not private lists.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: sharing usage data with sales invites premature expansion pitches that can strain trust if the customer is struggling; pair visibility with timing rules.
