Lead Source Attribution

Lead source attribution is the practice of recording which channel, campaign, or touchpoint produced each lead, so pipeline and revenue can be traced back to origins.

Common models include first-touch (the first known interaction gets credit), last-touch (the final one), and multi-touch distributions across the journey.

At the lead stage, attribution is inherently partial: it captures known touches, not dark social or offline influence.

A practical example

Example: a lead first found via an organic blog post, then clicked a retargeting ad, and finally booked through a webinar form is recorded with all three touches under a multi-touch model.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check which attribution models the tool supports and whether you can switch models without losing data.
  • Verify it can capture source data from forms, chat, ads, and your CRM in one unified record.
  • Confirm how it handles leads with no trackable first touch, such as referrals or offline events.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Attribution models describe correlation within tracked touchpoints; they cannot prove a channel caused the conversion, so treat model outputs as directional.
