Lead Source Tracking

Lead source tracking records the original channel or campaign that produced each lead at the moment of creation, storing it as a fixed field on the lead record.

It answers "where did this lead first come from?" and is the foundation for any later attribution, because attribution models reinterpret source data but cannot recover it if it was never captured.

A practical example

Example: a lead arriving from a LinkedIn ad carries source "paid social" and campaign name in hidden form fields; if they later convert via organic search, the original source field still shows the paid social origin.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Check that the platform writes source data on first capture and prevents later overwrites by subsequent sessions.
  • Verify hidden-field capture works on every form, chatbot, and landing page builder you use, not just the vendor's own forms.
  • Ask what fallback value is recorded when referrer and UTM data are missing, so gaps are visible rather than silent.

Limitations and tradeoffs

First-capture source can be wrong when a lead's first touch is untrackable, such as a podcast mention or dark social share, so treat the recorded source as the best measurable origin, not necessarily the true first exposure.
