Opportunity Exception Queue

An opportunity exception queue is a holding list where opportunity records that fail business rules—missing close dates, amounts below thresholds, stages advanced without required fields, or duplicate deal associations—are parked instead of entering normal pipeline reporting.

It keeps broken records out of forecasts while making them visible for correction.

A practical example

Example: a rule requires a next step and a close date before an opportunity can enter the negotiation stage.

Deals missing either land in the exception queue with a reason code, and a sales operations analyst clears them weekly rather than letting them distort the forecast.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Confirm the queue captures a specific reason code per record, not just a generic failure flag.
  • Ask whether exceptions can be assigned to owners with due dates and escalation if unaddressed.
  • Verify exception volume is reportable over time, so recurring rule failures can be traced to their source.

Limitations and tradeoffs

A queue only helps if someone is accountable for clearing it; unreviewed exception queues become silent data graveyards, and aggressive validation rules can push reps to enter placeholder data just to avoid the queue.
