Qualification Frameworks (BANT, MEDDIC)

Qualification frameworks are structured checklists reps use to decide whether a deal deserves pursuit. BANT (Budget, Authority, Need, Timeline) is a lightweight, seller-side filter suited to shorter cycles.

MEDDIC (Metrics, Economic buyer, Decision criteria, Decision process, Identify pain, Champion) is a deeper, buyer-side discipline for complex, multi-stakeholder purchases.

A practical example

Example: a rep selling a $5,000 annual tool applies BANT in one discovery call, confirming budget and a 30-day timeline.

A rep selling a $250,000 platform maps MEDDIC fields: who signs, what metrics the economic buyer reports to the board, and which champion will internally advocate.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can the CRM capture each framework's fields as structured data, not free-text notes?
  • Does the vendor support multiple frameworks per team, since segment-specific motions differ?
  • Can pipeline reports filter and forecast by qualification stage completeness?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Frameworks only work when enforced; if your CRM treats qualification as optional fields, reps will skip them and pipeline data degrades.
