Stakeholder Mapping

Stakeholder mapping is the practice of identifying every person involved in a buying decision, their role (economic buyer, champion, blocker, end user), their influence level, and their stance toward your solution.

In B2B sales, purchases rarely rest on one person, so reps document the committee inside the CRM, linking contacts to the opportunity and updating relationships as the deal progresses.

A practical example

Example: selling a marketing automation platform into a mid-size retailer, a rep maps the CMO as economic buyer, a marketing ops manager as champion, a skeptical IT director as potential blocker, and two campaign managers as end users.

Each contact gets a role tag and engagement notes, so the rep knows to win IT over before the security review, not after.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Can reps attach custom roles and influence ratings to contacts on an opportunity, not just generic contact roles?
  • Does the tool surface relationship strength signals, such as meeting frequency or email responsiveness, per stakeholder?
  • Can you visualize the full buying committee on one screen, including gaps where no contact exists yet?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Stakeholder maps depend on rep discipline; a CRM will not automatically know a contact is a blocker unless it infers engagement data.

Budget time for manual updates and define a shared tagging convention so maps stay consistent across the team.
