API Resilience

API resilience is the overall posture an integration adopts when a vendor API is slow, erroring, or partially degraded.

Circuit breakers and retries are individual mechanisms; resilience is the designed combination of timeouts, retry policies, fallbacks, and degradation choices per connector — deciding whether failure is visible and recoverable or silent and corrupting.

A practical example

Example: an enrichment API starts timing out. A resilient connector applies short timeouts, retries with backoff, then flags affected records as 'pending enrichment' instead of writing empty values that overwrite good data.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how each connector behaves under vendor degradation — timeouts, retries, and fallback order.
  • Confirm failures surface visibly, such as flagged records or an alert, not silent data gaps.
  • Check whether degraded periods are logged so scoring and attribution gaps can be reconstructed.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Silent data gaps during API instability corrupt scoring and attribution long after the vendor recovers — and 'the connector retries' is not a resilience posture by itself.
