At-Most-Once Delivery

At-most-once delivery means a logical message is delivered zero or one time within the stated delivery boundary. It avoids redelivery in that boundary at the cost of possible loss.

An implementation may acknowledge before processing or omit retries; logging and failure visibility depend on the system and are not inherently absent.

A practical example

Example: a monitoring stream accepts occasional missing samples because the next observation replaces them.

A team evaluating the same delivery mode for demo requests instead requires a durable intake record and a separate reconciliation process to detect missing work.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask which boundary the guarantee covers and whether the producer can create duplicate logical events.
  • Test receiver failure and inspect what the system logs or exposes for recovery.
  • Check whether source records support reconciliation and whether missing events are acceptable for this use case.

Limitations and tradeoffs

At-most-once delivery does not prove that the full application is free of duplicate actions.

Its loss tradeoff may be acceptable for some replaceable observations, but consequential workflows need an explicit recovery design rather than assumptions about silence or safety.
