Exactly-Once Processing

Exactly-once processing describes a logical event whose effect is committed once within a defined processing boundary, even when execution is retried. Implementations may coordinate input progress and output state through transactions or other mechanisms.

The claim must specify which state is covered; an email, payment or external API call may sit outside that boundary.

A practical example

Example: a stream processor commits an aggregate update and its input position together. A crash can cause work to execute again without changing the committed aggregate twice.

An email sent outside that transaction still needs its own duplicate protection.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask the vendor to identify the exact inputs, state and outputs covered by the guarantee.
  • Test crashes before and after commit, including acknowledgement loss and restart.
  • Review external side effects, deduplication retention and recovery after data is replayed.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Exactly-once processing does not mean code runs only once or that an entire business workflow has the same guarantee.

Evaluate the mechanism and failure scope rather than relying on a product label or assuming idempotency alone covers every side effect.
