Delta Sync

Delta sync is a synchronization mode that transfers only records created or changed since the last run, rather than re-sending the entire dataset.

It depends on the source system exposing a reliable change indicator, such as an 'updated at' timestamp or a change log. Full sync, by contrast, reprocesses everything and is slower but immune to missed changes.

A practical example

Example: a CRM with 200,000 contacts adds 300 new ones overnight.

A delta sync moves only those 300; a full sync reprocesses all 200,000 and may hit API rate limits (caps on how many calls you can make per period).

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask how the vendor detects changes: timestamps, webhooks, or a change feed, and what happens if a record is updated without touching that field.
  • Check whether you can force a full resync when you suspect drift.
  • Confirm how deletions propagate: delta syncs often miss records deleted at the source.

Limitations and tradeoffs

Tradeoff: delta sync is fast and cheap but can silently miss deletions or backdated edits; periodic full syncs are a common safety net.
