Full Sync

Full sync is a data synchronization mode in which every record in a source system is copied or refreshed in the destination, regardless of when it last changed.

It guarantees completeness — no historical record is missed — and establishes a known baseline on first connection.

The cost is volume: full syncs consume API quota, take longer, and can overwrite destination fields that local teams edited.

Vendors differ in whether full sync runs once as an initial load, on a schedule, or on demand, and in how they handle conflicts during the copy.

A practical example

Example: before migrating to a new marketing platform, a team runs a full sync of all 400,000 contacts so segmentation can be built on complete history rather than only recent activity.

What to evaluate before investing

  • Ask whether full sync is a one-time initial load, a recurring option, or both.
  • Confirm how API rate limits are respected during a full sync and the expected duration at your record volume.
  • Check conflict rules: when a record differs in both systems, which side wins and is the choice configurable?

Limitations and tradeoffs

Repeating full syncs on large datasets is slow and quota-hungry; most teams pair an initial full sync with incremental sync for ongoing updates.
